The Story of Greed

August 17, 2008

That is a harsh title but that is how I am feeling at the moment …….. stressed by some-one’s uncaring attitude. We have lived in our present home (rented) for two years, we are good tenants, the place is kept looking well and we will often get things repaired ourselves as we don’t want to wait on the landlord. There has been a shortage of rental places in the whole of Australia and things are very competitive, our landlord believes that she can get an extra $120 to $150 per week. Because our laws do not allow landlords to put rents up an unreasonable amount they could not do that to us. We have been told that our lease will not be renewed, so we have to leave. That allows them to charge the new tenants the higher amount. We have offered to pay a lot extra just to stay until the end of the year, Jess is doing her final year of school and we are desperately trying to keep the world calm and stress-free for herĀ  and Graham is in the middle of a large contract that will continue to the end of October so he has very little time to himself. It is strange but at the same time that this is happening to us, Graham’s brother is going through the same thing. Their rent is going up by $60 per week and then they will be on a two month’s lease so that the owner can put the rent again in two months time.

Hey Molly thanks for stopping by! Oh boy, Oh boy do I wish I were there to give you hug and tell you everything is going to be alright. I’m so sorry for your trouble. It’s such a bummer! I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers. Keep your head up. I know that you don’t feel it right now, but something good is going to come from all of your troubles. I can feel it! God Bless You,
Vanessa

I am wondering how the landlords really justify this because the interest rates are almost, very soon, going to start going down which means people will be buying again, which then means they will have to drop the rent again. I dont know if thats how it works but it seems like a a cutthroat way for landlords to make a fast buck at your expense.
What awful people to do that. Good luck and I hope it all works out.

We’re going through the same thing bless you! Circumstances are a little different in that we are trying to get out of a lease to maintain “peace of mind”over a myriad of issues and proven “failure to comply” by the landlord.Today we were visiting at tenancies office in preparation for a upcoming Tennacy Tribunal hearing. As tenants we have always done the right thing, but what you have mentioned is the tip of the iceberg for us, with my husband’s open heart surgery approaching. We are in the process of doctors and specialists verifying and supporting us in this. People at the Tenancies office have been very good to us.I am most aware, that on the internet you have to be very careful about what you say, but like you, we could have really done without this at this time.I am hoping something good will come out of this for you and me. You have my sympathy and support big time.

After rereading your post I’m thinking maybe the landlord is making things unbearable for us so that we will leave and she can do just what you’re talking about.

Oh wow, sorry to hear of your troubles. It’s unbelievable how unfeeling people can be sometimes. They probably just put blinders on, so they don’t think about how they are hurting you. That really sucks!

I know it sounds kind of trite, but almost every time I’ve gone through something tough like that, it ends up being a blessing in disguise. Not that you don’t have to pay dearly for it, but you will come out the other end better off somehow.

You know Sandra, the same thing happened to my daughter. Only what happened was that they took everything out of the hands of the real estate agent and allowed my daughter, partner (and new born child) to rent privately. Then a couple of months later they put the house in the hands of another real estate and upped the rent by $150 per week. The house was a horrible home too. The previous tenant had kept dogs inside the house and when the carpets were cleaned and the house locked up the house took on a particular odour (that my daughter had been putting up with for the 18 months that they lived there). The owners tried to tell her that she had to pay for new carpets because her dogs (which had never been in the house) had ruined. We eventually got her bond back and she moved a little closer back to us. So I’m hearing you on it all and I’m sorry that you have to go through all this right now. Especially with QCS in the coming week.
Take care.
