I went to bed last night thinking about the topic ‘fierce’. Lots of ideas passed through my mind. Then an idea came to me, we had been talking about the fierceness of the sun in Queensland during the week. It is four times hotter and stronger here than it is in Melbourne. We have changed the children’s lunch hour at school to 11 0′clock and their second break to 1.30 so that limits the time that they are in the dangerous part of the day. We have also put up huge sails across the play area so that they can play safely. All schools that I have taught in in the last couple of years have the rule ‘no hat, no play’. So in my drawing my little lady looks unhappy…… why? Because I image as the years go on and with the effects of climate change, making ’sand castles’ will happen less and less. Sorry to be so gloomy.

hi sandra!
i love your new illustration!
have a great weekend!
melissa
This is a beautiful illustration and a very wise school system you have.
I love the merging of vector illustration and raster image. I can’t imagine the heat and having to wear a hat during the summer. It never gets that hot here in Indiana.
She has “old” eyes that can remember another time. We’ll be okay, Sandra, even with the changes that will have to come.
Nice place your blog!
Suzan I hope that you are right, I must admit it worries me.
I’d rather be in Queensland at the moment. I’m practically sitting on top of the heater here in South Australia. It’s freezing! I like your illustration very much.
Here in Tokyo, hats are a must for most schoolchildren. Especially during hot sunny weather. I hope we’ll be able to make lots of sandcastles for centuries to come. Wonderful illustration!
Beautiful illustration.
From the girl’s narrow eyes and red cheek, I can tell the sun is fierce! Very beautiful done!
I myself have done many of sandcastles behind peoples chairs to block out the “Fierce Venezuelan sun”. But you guys in Australian have good concepts, the requierment of hats! Beautifully done!
Your words are so thoughtful and I love the little girls playing in sand. So summery.
it is beautiful. i especially love how you have blended the drawing with a ‘real’ imagine. again superb! it is lovely to have a talented mum! xoxo
Very lovely illustration- i like the digital collage aspect; very nicely done. I like the thought that went into the topic as well! Very nice!
Lovely illo!!!
Gorgeous illustration. Looks terrific.
My daughter’s school changed their breaks a few years ago. They have their 15minute morning tea break at 11am undercover. Then at 1pm, they have a 15 minute lunch break (also undercover). Playtime is 2.15-2.45. They go back to the classroom and then get their homework and everything ready for the bell.
It works well for them and keeps them inside when it’s really hot.
